Learning Scales in Open Position

Learning scales might seem like extra work at first, but it’s one of the most valuable skills a guitarist can build. The open-position major scales—C, A, G, E, and D, are especially important because they form the foundation for every other major scale you’ll ever play.

Once you master these five shapes,(plus some modified shapes) something amazing happens: you can move them anywhere on the neck to play any major scale, in any key, and in any position. These shapes unlock the fretboard, helping you see how music fits together. They also strengthen your fingers, improve coordination, and give you the freedom to play melodies, solos, and riffs all over the guitar.
